CROW
Applique and embroidery on upcycled wool blanket
This appliqué and embroidered crow in flight is built upon a wool blanket layered with cotton, forming a soft yet substantial ground. The bird is constructed from varied black fabrics each selected for its distinct quality, weight, and finish. By layering these materials,
I have created shifting textures and subtle tonal differences, allowing the black to hold depth rather than flatness.
I meticulously worked into the piece using hand stitching mixing colours, tones and thread thicknesses. Often allowing the work to rest and returning to it and working until it feels complete.
This work is deeply personal and loosely rooted in a dream I had about my father shortly after he passed away. Crows have long fascinated me they feel spiritual, wise, and ancient.
Their blackness is never empty; it is rich, almost like velvet, holding light, memory, and mystery all at once.
Through layered fabric and careful stitching, I sought to capture that sense of presence the beauty and gravity of a crow in flight. The piece carries something unspoken within it: grief, guidance, and a quiet, enduring connection.
